On 22 January 2020, German chemical giant BASF held a groundbreaking event for its new Agricultural Solutions Regional Production Hub in Singapore. The $45 million production plant is expected to be completed by September 2021 and will supply the company’s patented crop protection products, at around seven million litres a year, once fully functional.

The plant is part of the company’s plan to expand its agricultural solutions business in Asia Pacific, said Mr Gustavo Palerosi Carneiro, head of BASF's agricultural solutions business in the region. He added that “Singapore’s status as a world-class logistics hub alongside its free-trade agreements with most Asia Pacific markets” also make it an ideal location for the facility. Mr Vincent Gros, president of BASF’s agricultural solutions division, said the new facility can help farmers in Asia improve productivity and sustainability of their farms.

Mr. Khalil A. Bakar, Director of Energy and Chemicals at the Singapore Economic Development Board recognized: “Securing future food supply is a global challenge. We are delighted that BASF has decided to establish its new regional production hub in Singapore, which will enhance the supply of safe, nutritious and affordable food in the region. Our proximity to the Asian markets will also enable BASF to capture new opportunities in the growing agricultural technology space.”
