MediaTek and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) sign MoU on 6G technology research collaboration

This press release was issued by MediaTek.

MediaTek announced on 26th June that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) for collaboration on 6G technology research. The MoU signing event took place during the 20th anniversary celebration of MediaTek Singapore.

During the event, in a pre-recorded statement, MediaTek Chairman, MK Tsai, committed S$500 million investment in Singapore over the next five years.

"We are committed to continuing to further our R&D capabilities, which will seed directly into our next generation SoC technologies. In the immediate pipeline, our Singapore teams are embarking on future technologies like TSMC’s 2nm process, 3DIC, and chiplet integration, as well as next-generation Wi-Fi 8 RF Transceiver design. All these newly developed engineering capabilities will enable MediaTek to embrace new markets for Computing, Automotive and Cloud-AI, on top of our existing product leadership in Smartphones. Today we will witness the signing of an MoU between MediaTek and SUTD on 6G Technology R&D. This collaboration will enable Singapore to extend its R&D efforts and become instrumental in standards development of next generation 6G wireless communication."

The signing of the MoU was witnessed by 400 MediaTek employees and 55 VIPs, including the Chairman of EDB, officials from the Taipei Representative Office, the President of SUTD, senior executives from A*STAR and its research institutes, university professors, and esteemed business partners of MediaTek.

"This partnership between SUTD and MediaTek is important for Singapore’s effort to build communications and connectivity capabilities, especially in 6G. This MoU is our first step to build a stronger relationship and we look forward to a bigger presence of MediaTek in Singapore for many more years to come."

Professor Phoon Kok Kwang

Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)

The MoU marks the first time MediaTek will set up an advanced wireless technology collaboration in Singapore, as well as the first 6G R&D technology investment in the country. The research will be part of Singapore’s national 6G program, called the Future Communications R&D Program (FCP) and led by SUTD Prof. Tony Quek. Despite being focused on 6G technologies, the four-year program will also strengthen Singapore’s 5G ecosystem and accelerate the transition to future communication technologies. MediaTek has been actively engaging in global 6G technology research initiatives and is preparing for 6G standardization within the 3GPP framework, which is due to start in 2025. This collaboration will help the Singapore research community strengthen its involvement in 6G standardization activities, and the global 6G ecosystem.
