Volvo Cars Tech Hub Singapore commemorates office opening with a hackathon event

This press release was issued by Volvo Car Group.

On 22 January 2025, Volvo Cars Tech Hub Singapore celebrated its office opening alongside a Hackathon centered on “Safe Driving in Urban Cities: Respect All Road Users.” This event was attended by our Guest of Honour, Ms Cindy Koh, Executive Vice President of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), 70 government, industry, university partners, academic researchers, and thirty student participants from four local universities. This celebration also served as a platform to establish the Tech Hub’s presence and share about its focus areas while fostering ties with industry partners and local talents.

Tech Hub Singapore was established in September 2023. It currently focuses on building capabilities in Robotics Engineering, Power Electronics, AI & Data Analytics and Electronics Engineering. These focus areas will support Volvo Cars’ in-house technology and software development.

Over the last year, the Tech Hub has achieved several milestones including:

  1. Moving into its dedicated office and lab space;
  2. Welcoming a dedicated team of department heads, who has formed strong ties with our headquarters in Gothenburg for its core focus areas;
  3. Represented Volvo Cars during the Swedish Royal Visit to Singapore, and showcased the partnership between Sweden and Singapore in driving innovation.

“The opening of our office marks an exciting chapter in Volvo Cars’ commitment to innovation and collaboration. Through initiatives like this Hackathon, we not only celebrate milestones but also foster partnerships and cultivate talent to drive impactful outcomes.”

Yvonne Tan

Head

Tech Hub Singapore

Paired with a Hackathon event, the office opening event was designed to be an engaging way to celebrate a significant milestone. This event served as a platform for the local team to share about the Tech Hub and explore potential partnerships and collaboration opportunities with industry and academic partners.

Additionally, the event provided university students with the hands-on experience of working with advanced technology, and strengthens the organisation’s commitment to innovation and collaboration.

“We are pleased that Volvo Cars has set up their Tech Hub in Singapore to drive innovation in areas such as robotics, AI, and electronics. These are areas that play to Singapore’s strengths. We look forward to the innovative solutions that will be created by the Tech Hub, in partnership with our ecosystem, that will shape the future of mobility.”

Cindy Koh

Executive Vice President

EDB

As Tech Hub Singapore continues to grow, it will expand its focus areas while ensuring that its development aligns with Volvo Cars’ ambition to be a leader in new technology and a fully electric car maker.
