The number of digital consumers in Southeast Asia (SEA) will reach 310 million by year end, a number previously forecasted to be reached in 2025, according to a recent report by Facebook and Bain & Company. These consumers make up 69 percent of the region’s population that are aged 15 and above.
Although digital transformation has been underway for some time in SEA, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the transition. Due to social distancing measures, more people are adopting home-centric lifestyles and shopping for groceries, clothing, electronics, and furnishings online. According to the report, the region’s online retail penetration accounts for 5 percent of its total including offline retail - higher than India’s 4 percent.
